Anatomy, shapes & the path through a pipe
A clear vocabulary for bowls, stems, chambers and the details that shape maintenance.
Outside and inside are different maps
The bowl is the outside form; the chamber is the hollow that holds tobacco. The rim surrounds its opening. The shank extends from the bowl, and the stem is the mouthpiece assembly. At the far end, the button is the small raised lip near the opening.
In a conventional push-fit pipe, the stem's tenon fits into the shank's mortise. Those two words are useful when describing a loose fit to a repairer. “The stem is broken” is less precise than “the tenon has snapped inside the mortise.”
Follow the airway
Air travels through the tobacco, into the draft passage and along the stem. A straight-looking exterior does not prove a straight internal passage. A filter chamber, reservoir, bend or offset drilling can change how a cleaner passes through.
The Peterson System is a useful exception to simplistic rules: its maker describes a raised draft hole and a separate moisture reservoir. A passage that does not meet the very bottom of the chamber is therefore not automatically a fault. Identify the design before judging it.
Recognize a family, then check the example
A billiard is broadly upright and cylindrical; an apple has a rounder bowl; a Dublin widens toward its rim. Bulldog and Rhodesian names describe related, often ringed bowl forms, with distinctions that vary in everyday usage. A churchwarden's long stem is its most obvious feature, but that length does not tell you its chamber capacity.
Shape names are useful shorthand, not engineering specifications. Sketch the profile and note the measurements of a pipe that fits you. That small reference is often more useful than memorizing every maker's numbering system.
